About the Minor :

The Minor in Economics and Development Studies provides students with a comprehensive understanding of economic growth and development, with a special focus on India. This interdisciplinary program combines concepts from economics, political science, sociology, anthropology, law, and public policy to analyse the complex issues surrounding economic development.

  • Developmental Studies: Meaning, Scope & Significance This course shall introduce developmental studies and explore its meaning, scope, and significance. Key concepts, theories, and historical perspectives that have shaped development policies and practices will be examined. The course also addresses cutting-edge issues, such as sustainable development goals, the role of technology, and social entrepreneurship. Engaging with contemporary debates and emerging trends fosters a comprehensive understanding of development principles and current challenges. This course sets the stage for advanced study and practical application in development.
  • Urbanization, Rural Development and Management This course should examine the processes and consequences of urbanization and rural development. It covers urban planning, rural development policies, and the management of urban-rural linkages. Key topics include the challenges of rapid urbanization, such as housing, infrastructure, service delivery, and strategies for rural development. The course also explores the interplay between urban and rural areas, focusing on integrated development approaches. Through case studies and practical examples, it will provide insights into effective management practices and policy interventions for balanced and inclusive development. 
  • NGOs, Civil Society and Development This course could explore the roles and contributions of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and civil society in development. It covers critical topics such as advocacy, capacity building, and the impact of NGOs on policy and social change. The course examines the relationship between civil society and the state, the effectiveness of grassroots initiatives, and the challenges NGOs face in different contexts. Through case studies and practical examples, the analysis focuses on successful NGO initiatives and their role in promoting sustainable development, empowering communities, and influencing policy at local, national, and global levels.
  • State, Market, and Development This course should engage in understanding the relationship between the state, market, and development. It covers the roles of government and the private sector in economic growth, the impact of globalization, and the interplay between public policies and market forces. Key topics include different models of state-market relations, regulatory frameworks, and the influence of international trade and finance. The course also explores case studies of successful and failed development strategies, highlighting the conditions under which state or market-led approaches most effectively promote sustainable and inclusive development.
  • Rethinking Inequality: Health and Education This course explores the dimensions and determinants of inequality, focusing on health and education. It covers theories of inequality, social determinants of health, and the impact of education on social mobility. Key topics include access to healthcare and education, disparities in health and educational outcomes, and policies to reduce inequality. The course examines the role of international organizations and government interventions in promoting equitable access to health and education services, highlighting successful strategies and ongoing challenges in addressing inequality.
  • Climate Change, Environment and Sustainable Development This course addresses the critical challenges of climate change and environmental sustainability. It covers the causes and consequences of climate change and ecological degradation and the policies and practices to mitigate them. Key topics include the science of climate change, renewable energy, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable resource management. The course also explores international agreements, national policies, and community-based approaches to environmental sustainability. Emphasis is placed on integrating environmental considerations into development planning and promoting sustainable practices that balance economic growth, social equity, and environmental protection.
  • Society and Social Change This course should examine the dynamics of social change and its impact on development. It covers theories of social change, the role of social movements, and the influence of cultural, economic, and political factors. Key topics include migration and development, exploring the causes and consequences of migration, and its effects on origin and destination countries. Additionally, the course addresses human rights and world politics, highlighting the evolution of human rights norms, the role of international institutions, and the impact of human rights on global development agendas. The integrated approach provides a comprehensive understanding of societal transformation and development.
  • Understanding Development through Data Analytics This course should introduce the use of data analytics in development research and policymaking. It covers quantitative and qualitative research methods, data collection techniques, and statistical analysis. Key topics include interpreting development indicators, using big data for social insights, and applying data visualization tools. The course also explores how data-driven approaches can inform and improve development strategies, project evaluations, and policy decisions. Emphasis is placed on practical data manipulation and analysis skills using hands-on data analytics software such as R, Python, and Tableau. The course will equip participants to leverage data for effective development planning and implementation.
  • Global Governance and Institutions This course explores the role of international institutions and global governance in development. It covers the structure, functions, and impact of key global institutions such as the United Nations, World Bank, International Monetary Fund, and World Trade Organization. Key topics include international cooperation, global policymaking, and the influence of these institutions on development agendas. The course also examines the challenges of global governance, including issues of legitimacy, accountability, and effectiveness. By understanding the dynamics of global governance, participants will gain insights into the opportunities and constraints in shaping international development policies and promoting sustainable global progress.
  • Law and Legal System This course examines the role of law and legal systems in development. It covers the relationship between law and economic and social outcomes, exploring how legal frameworks influence development processes. Key topics include property rights, legal reforms, governance, and the rule of law. The course also addresses the impact of international law and human rights on development and the role of legal institutions in promoting justice and equity. By understanding different legal systems and their development implications, participants will gain insights into how law shapes societal progress and the challenges of implementing legal reforms.
