Dr. Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw

Dr. Kiran Mazumdar‑Shaw is the Founder, Chairman, and Managing Director of Biocon Limited, India’s leading biotechnology enterprise headquartered in Bengaluru. A globally recognized entrepreneur and scientist, she has played a pivotal role in shaping the biotechnology industry in India and advancing affordable healthcare solutions worldwide.

She is the recipient of several prestigious international honors, including the Othmer Gold Medal for outstanding contributions to science and chemistry. She has been featured in the Financial Times’ Top 50 Women in Business and ranked among the world’s most powerful women by Forbes. In 2012, she was named Global Indian of the Year by Pharma Leaders Magazine.

Dr. Mazumdar‑Shaw’s contributions to biotechnology and innovation have earned her numerous national and international awards. These include India’s civilian honors, the Padma Shri (1989) and the Padma Bhushan (2005), the Nikkei Asia Prize for Regional Growth (2009), the Veuve Clicquot Initiative for Economic Development – Asia Award (2007), the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award for Life Sciences & Healthcare (2002), and recognition as a Technology Pioneer by the World Economic Forum (2002). She was also conferred the title Global Indian Woman of the Year at the Pharma Leaders’ Pharmaceutical Leadership Summit (2012).

At Biocon, she established a dedicated Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) wing focusing on healthcare, education, and infrastructure development. Through the Mazumdar‑Shaw Medical Foundation, she supports translational research and initiatives such as the Mazumdar‑Shaw Cancer Outreach Program, aimed at improving access to cancer care.

She currently serves as the Chairperson of the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIMB), contributing to academic governance and leadership development.
