Shilpee Jain
Ph.D., IIT KanpurWe are a team of bioengineers developing advanced micro- and nanodevices for diverse biomedical applications. Our current research primarily focuses on efficient intracellular delivery of biomolecules using external stimulations to achieve improved therapeutic outcomes.
A major area of our research is dedicated to developing novel therapeutic strategies for solid tumors, which remain a pressing global health challenge. This burden is particularly high in low- and middle-income countries, where access to effective treatments is limited. Despite the use of conventional approaches such as surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy, clinical outcomes remain unsatisfactory, with 5-year survival rates stagnating at around 50–60%. These limitations underscore the urgent need for alternative, targeted therapies.
One promising avenue is Magnetic Hyperthermia Therapy (MHT), an emerging nanotechnology-based approach. In MHT, biocompatible magnetic nanoparticles are introduced into tumor tissue and exposed to an alternating magnetic field, generating localized heat to selectively kill cancer cells. This method offers high spatial precision, minimizes collateral tissue damage, improves patient comfort, and can be combined synergistically with existing therapies to overcome resistance mechanisms.
We are also exploring the use of micro/nanobots for targeted drug and biomolecule delivery. By applying external stimulations (such as electric or magnetic fields) and functionalizing these micro/nanobots, we can significantly enhance the precision, efficiency, and speed of delivering therapeutic agents to specific populations of cells. In addition, we are working on smart, biodegradable bandages for wound healing. These bandages not only support regenerated tissue but also accelerate recovery by providing controlled external electrical stimulation.
Dr. Shilpee Jain is an Assistant Professor at the School of Biosciences, Chanakya University. She received her PhD from the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur, and her research primarily focuses on biomedical science and entrepreneurship, with expertise in hyperthermia, cancer therapeutics, medical microrobots, translational research, tissue engineering, and advanced nanomaterials.
She previously served as an INSPIRE Faculty Fellow at the Indian Institute of Science, where she developed innovative biomedical devices, and later co-founded MagHeals Private Limited to translate her research into clinical applications.
Her work has been supported by prestigious grants, including the BIG BIRAC grant and the INSPIRE Faculty Award, and she has published in leading international journals such as Biomaterials, Carbon, Nanoscale, and Hyperthermia.
