The School of Biosciences, Chanakya University, offers Biotechnology Majors in BSc and BSc-Hons programs. Biotechnology is a multidisciplinary field that uses living organisms, cells, and biological systems to create useful products, technologies, and processes for society. Biotechnology solves problems in a variety of sectors, including healthcare, agriculture, environmental management, and industrial processes, by utilizing concepts from biology, chemistry, physics, engineering, and computer science.

The program is designed for experiential learning and incorporates a mix of theory, tutorials, group discussion, and practical sessions. Obtaining a degree in biotechnology can lead to employment that influences the future, as the field is at the forefront of developments in sustainability, environmental conservation, agriculture, and medicine. The demand for skilled biotechnologists is rising, offering opportunities to innovate and make a real-world impact.

Course structure

The curriculum of the BSc program is organized around a credit-based semester system as per the National Education Policy. The program has three optional streams. (i) BSc (6 semesters) (ii) BSc-Hons (8 semesters) (iii) BSc Hons-Res (8 semesters). Each semester consists of courses, including lecture and laboratory sessions, group discussions, and industry visits, in addition to life enhancement skills offered by the university as foundation courses. Students enrolling in the BSc Biotechnology program will undertake preparatory courses in physics, chemistry, mathematics, computer science, and biology in the first year. At the beginning of the second year, students will have the option to choose minor courses offered from different schools of the university. The students have the opportunity to design their learning outcomes by choosing electives in frontier areas of biotechnology such as nanobiotechnology, bioprospecting, biophysics, biomechanics, and minor research projects. In the 7th and 8th semesters, the students are exposed to the contemporary areas in bioinformatics and biotechnology, such as applications of AI/ML in drug discovery, biological data analysis, synthetic biology, and tissue engineering. Students enrolled in the BSc Hons-Res track will spend the entire 8th semester on a research project.

Program Highlights

  • Comprehensive and Contemporary Curriculum
  • Gain in-depth knowledge of molecular biology, genetics, microbiology, biochemistry, and bioinformatics, with a strong emphasis on practical applications and research methodologies.
  • Flexible and multidisciplinary program structure
  • At the completion of the program, the students graduate with a major in biotechnology and a minor in the subject of their choice offered by other schools of the university. The students also undertake broad skill set development courses offered as a part of the university foundation course.
  • Hands-On Learning
  • Participate in lab-based courses and research projects that give you real-world experience in biotechnological techniques such as recombinant DNA technology, genome editing methods, programming languages for biology, and data analysis using advanced bioinformatics.
  • Specialized Electives
  • Customize your degree with electives in areas such as nanotechnology engineering, bioprospecting, biomechanics, and plant and animal biotechnology.
  • Research Project
  • Engage in research projects, contributing to areas like gene editing, synthetic biology, and environmental biotechnology as part of the research project. Apply your skills and knowledge in a 6-month capstone project BSc (Hons-Res) where you solve real-world biotechnology problems or develop new technologies under faculty guidance.
