
Dr. S. Somanath, an eminent aerospace engineer and visionary leader, serves as the Chancellor of Chanakya University, bringing to the role nearly four decades of pioneering contributions to India’s space programme. Widely regarded as one of the nation’s foremost experts in launch vehicle systems and space technology, he combines deep technical expertise with a strategic vision for national advancement and scientific progress.
As the 10th Chairman of ISRO and Secretary, Department of Space (2022–2025), Dr. Somanath led India through a defining period of accomplishment. Under his leadership, India achieved the historic Chandrayaan-3 soft landing near the Moon’s south pole, making India the first nation to do so. He guided major missions including Aditya-L1, XPoSat, INSAT-3DS, NVS-01, Oceansat, GSAT-24, SpaDeX, as well as multiple commercial PSLV and LVM3–OneWeb launches. He also oversaw the development of the Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV), the Test Vehicle (TV) series, and the Re-usable Launch Vehicle–LEX landing experiment.
Dr. Somanath played a crucial role in shaping the architecture of Gaganyaan, India’s maiden human spaceflight mission, including the successful test vehicle flight for abort demonstration. As Secretary, he led the formulation of the National Space Policy, strengthened ISRO’s engagement with private industry and space start-ups, and enabled expanded commercial operations through NSIL. He was instrumental in outlining Space Vision 2047, charting India’s long-term roadmap for exploration missions, human spaceflight expansion, the Bharatiya Antariksha Station, new launch pads, and lunar human missions.
He has been honoured with numerous awards, including the Space Gold Medal, the National Aeronautics Prize, the ISRO Performance Excellence Award, the IAF Hall of Fame, and distinguished alumni recognitions from IISc, IIT Madras, and IIT Kanpur. He is a Fellow of INAE, INSA, AeSI, ASI, and a member of the International Academy of Astronautics (IAA), in addition to holding leadership roles such as President (Elect) of AeSI and President of SAQR. He was also inducted as an international member of the National Academy of Engineering.
Beyond his technical and administrative achievements, Dr. Somanath has published extensively in areas such as structural dynamics, materials modelling, dynamic analysis of separation systems, and launch vehicle design, and has represented India at major international forums including UN-COPUOS and the International Astronautical Federation.
As Chancellor, Dr. Somanath envisions Chanakya University as a hub of scientific excellence, indigenous innovation, and global relevance, dedicated to nurturing future-ready leaders grounded in values, knowledge, and purpose.
