The Neurodiversity and Autism Sensitization Program was conducted on 18 September 2025 at Preksha Auditorium from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm. The session opened with a welcome address by Ms. Jeevitha, second-year M.Sc. Psychology student.
The resource person, Ms. Priya Vijayan, Head – Education Service and Management, Academy for Severe Handicaps and Autism (ASHA), delivered the session. Drawing on over three decades of experience, she explained autism spectrum disorder (ASD) as a neurodevelopmental condition involving difficulties in social interaction, communication, and repetitive behaviours, while also highlighting the abilities and strengths of individuals on the spectrum.
She underlined the importance of early screening and intervention to support learning, communication, and adaptive skills. The role of parents and caregivers was emphasized, particularly through counselling, psychoeducation, and consistent engagement. She clarified how ASD differs from other mental health conditions, addressing misconceptions.
Ms. Vijayan presented examples from structured educational programs, therapeutic interventions, and community support initiatives at ASHA, showing how these approaches improve quality of life for individuals with autism. She urged participants to adopt a neurodiversity perspective, recognizing variation as difference rather than deficit.
The session concluded with the presentation of a memento to Ms. Vijayan by Prof. Shrinivas S. Balli, Dean of Student Affairs, Captain Chaithanya, Director of Student Affairs, and Dr. Rema M. K., Coordinator, along with student representatives.
