Special Talk by Sri Rajashekara N – IPS, Director, Central Detective Training Institute, Hyderabad and Bangalore on Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Its Implications on Policing in India at Chanakya University

A special talk was delivered by Sri Rajashekara N, IPS, the Director of the Central Detective Training Institute (CDTI), Hyderabad and Bangalore, at Chanakya University on topic “Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and its Implications on Policing in India.” The event was attended by students and faculties, focusing on understanding the transformative aspects of the newly introduced Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and its impact on policing in the country.

Sri Rajashekara provided a comprehensive overview of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which is transformed version of the earlier Indian Penal Code (IPC). The speaker emphasized how BNS seeks to modernize and streamline the existing legal framework in India by making it more responsive to contemporary challenges. One of the central goals of the BNS is to create a more efficient criminal justice system that prioritizes public safety, ensures accountability, and is in line with international legal standards.

He highlighted the changes that the new law has brought about including the identification of certain new offences and new ways to punish the culprits by introducing community services. The shift to a more victim-centric, transparent, and evidence-based approach to policing would necessitate the adaptation of new technologies and methodologies, as well as strengthening the coordination between various law enforcement agencies. He further discussed the challenges that law enforcement agencies might face during the transition phase, such as the need for comprehensive training programs for police officers and the overhaul of outdated systems. He also emphasized the importance of ethical policing and the role of community engagement in fostering trust between the public and the police.

The talk was followed by an interactive session where participants engaged in a discussion on the practical aspects of the BNS, with sharing some of the insights and thought process by the students.
