Dr. Sudeshna Mukherjee
Ph.D., Jawaharlal Nehru University, New DelhiMy research focuses on understanding and changing the structures of inequality through rigorous, interdisciplinary scholarship. I am trained as a sociologist, specializing in Gender Studies. My work lies at the crossroads of gender, human rights, development studies, public policy, and elder care. I rely heavily on empirical and field-based research in the Indian context. A key aspect of my work is examining how social institutions, including family, state, market, and community, both create vulnerability and open up opportunities for agency, negotiation, and social change.
My sustained engagement with multiple impact evaluation studies played a pivotal role in shaping my research vision. I do not see research as just a way to produce knowledge, but also as a tool to drive social change. My evidence-based research highlights the ongoing gap between policy design and real-world experience. They critically examine how laws, welfare programs, and development initiatives are implemented at the grassroots level. These studies, in particular, highlight the experiences of women, older adults, and marginalized groups. My work on elder care examines the connections among health, financial difficulties, social isolation, and government accountability, particularly during demographic shifts and changing policy landscapes.
Recently, I have turned my attention to urban poverty, focusing on slum settlements. By examining daily practices, care relationships, and interactions with both state and civil society institutions, I aim to understand how urban development efforts are shaped by informal conditions and deprivation, and why many initiatives fail to tackle structural inequalities.
Deeply influenced by the methodological and ethical challenges I encountered during fieldwork and impact evaluations; I plan to develop an Indian perspective impact evaluation framework through active collaboration with peers. This approach aims to be sensitive to the Indian context, grounded in real experiences, and responsive to local institutional conditions. It would provide alternatives to technical, externally driven evaluation models that often overlook the complex social realities and inequalities in India.
