My doctoral journey is driven by a curiosity about how nation states formulate foreign policy, particularly in regions marked by strategic flux and layered geopolitical interests. My research focuses on India’s foreign policy towards the Indo-Pacific region between 2014 and 2024, a decade that has seen shifts in India’s external engagement, domestic political system, and its global standing.

I inquire about: What factors have influenced India’s foreign policy decision towards the Indo-Pacific Region, and how they have evolved in the above-mentioned time period? I approach this in a interdisciplinary lens, which I have gathered through my exposure through my Master degree.

I utilise a wide range of sources such as the official documents, public statements, and expert insights. Rather than offering a purely event-based or bilateral perspective, my work seeks to locate India’s Indo-Pacific policy in the broader context of global transitions and regional rebalancing. My association with the Subash Chandra Bose Chair on International Relations at the university further enriches this effort by facilitating engagement with scholars, practitioners, and policymakers, opening up valuable avenues for both networking and sourcing perspectives.

What motivates this research is not only the academic gap in understanding how India formulates its Indo-Pacific strategy, but also a broader concern: to try and understand how the black box of foreign policy making functions in India in a fast-changing international order. In tracing these dynamics, I hope to contribute meaningfully to both the scholarship on Indian foreign policy and the wider debates on regional order, multilateralism, and strategic autonomy.

Krutika is a doctoral scholar at Chanakya University, Bengaluru, where she co-teaches two foundational courses—Interface of Law, Policy and Practice and Global Citizenship—as part of the Chanakya Foundation Course. She has also served as a Teaching Assistant for the Fellowships Batch of 2023–2024 and 2024–2025. In addition to her academic responsibilities, she played an active role in curating and organising events under the Subash Chandra Bose Chair on International Relations, fostering dialogue on contemporary global affairs.

Her research focuses on India’s foreign policy with a specific emphasis on the Indo-Pacific region, exploring the dynamics of policy formulation and the actors shaping strategic outcomes. She has published in the domains of public policy, international relations, and India’s evolving foreign engagements, especially within the Indo-Pacific theatre. Krutika’s work largely aims to contribute to the emerging discussions on India’s global positioning and the policymaking landscape.
