Ph.D., National Sanskrit University, TirupatiProf. Ramakrishna Pejathaya
Ph.D., National Sanskrit University, TirupatiMy research interests span three broad and interconnected domains, reflecting a commitment to exploring India’s rich intellectual and cultural heritage.
The first domain, Early Astral Sciences, centers on reconstructing the history of both astronomy and astrology. My focus is on tracing the development of these disciplines while carefully distinguishing their Greek and Indian roots. Through detailed analysis of historical sources and classical texts, I aim to highlight indigenous contributions to astral knowledge and to examine the interactions and exchanges between different cultural traditions that shaped the evolution of astronomy and astrology in early periods.
The second domain is the Sanskrit Literary Tradition, where my work involves uncovering and revitalizing lesser-known poetic compositions and traditions within classical Sanskrit literature and poetics. By producing scholarly translations and critical studies, I aim to bring these important yet underappreciated works to wider attention. This inquiry also includes Kannada classical literature, allowing for a broader and more nuanced understanding of regional literary traditions and their relationship to the larger Sanskritic corpus.
The third domain concerns Indian Culture, explored through the study of various śāstric traditions. I investigate the nature, salient features, and cultural significance of Indian textual traditions by engaging with multiple śāstras, focusing on their philosophical and ritual dimensions and their impact on Indian cultural identity. Within this domain, I also work extensively on the Bharatiya Arthashastra Tradition. My approach involves systematically organizing and critically studying the lesser-known texts of the Arthashastra tradition, with the aim of elucidating their significance for understanding the cultural and civilizational foundations of governance in the Indian intellectual context.
In addition, I am actively engaged in the study of Avadhānam, a uniquely Indian intellectual performance tradition. My exploration covers its historical background, distinctive characteristics, and the cognitive and cultural benefits it offers, emphasizing the remarkable interplay of memory, creativity, and linguistic dexterity inherent in this art form.
Together, these research areas contribute to a comprehensive understanding of India’s scientific, literary, and cultural legacies, emphasizing both internal diversity and the cross-cultural influences that shaped them.
Ramakrishna Pejathaya has been teaching at Chanakya University since 2022. He has designed and delivered courses such as Introduction to Indian Knowledge Systems, Appreciating Art, Foundations of Indian Culture, Life Lessons from the Bhagavad Gita, and Revisiting the Mahabharata.
Dr. Pejathaya traditionally studied Jyotiṣa śāstra (Indian Astronomy & Astrology) along with Vyākaraṇa and Sāhitya at SMSP Sanskrit College, Udupi, and earned his Ph.D. from the Rashtriya Sanskrit Vidyapeetha, Tirupati, on Śrīpati’s Siddhānta Śekhara and its influence on later astronomers.
Notably, he is one of the very few practicing Ashtāvadhānis in India, performing Avadhānams in Sanskrit and Kannada. To date, he has presented over 30 Avadhānams across India and was the founding director of the Centre for Avadhānam, jointly initiated by Chinmaya Vishwavidyapeetham and Indica. His contributions to the art have been recognized with the Avadhāna Vichakṣaṇa title by Śrī Palimaru Maṭha, Udupi. He also received the Prof. C.G. Purushottama Book Award from KSU, Bengaluru for his book Śekhara Vaiśiṣṭyam.
In research, Dr. Pejathaya leads projects such as developing textbooks on Indian astronomy funded by CSU, Delhi, and has completed a two-credit MOOC on Avadhānam project. He co-investigated the Centre for Excellence on Indian Knowledge Systems project funded by the IKS Division, New Delhi, and co-edited, translated, and mathematically analyzed the 16th-century eclipse text Grahaṇamukura. He has several research publications to his credit.
