RF and Microwave Engineering. Antenna, Filter, Filtenna, SIW, MIMO, Metamaterial Enabled Antenna and Reconfigurable Filtenna

My research journey is deeply rooted in the field of RF and microwave engineering, where I have dedicated my efforts to advancing antenna, filter, and integrated filtenna designs. My primary focus is on developing high-performance solutions using microstrip and substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) technologies, targeting the L, S, C, X, and ultra-wideband (UWB) frequency ranges. These designs are engineered not only to meet stringent performance criteria but also to serve critical applications in satellite and radar communications, where reliability, compactness, and efficiency are paramount.

A core aspect of my work revolves around the seamless integration of filtering and radiating structures—filtennas—that enhance spectral selectivity while reducing system complexity. By leveraging microstrip and SIW platforms, I strive to achieve lightweight, low-loss, and cost-effective implementations that can be readily adapted to diverse system requirements. My designs often explore advanced feeding techniques, impedance matching strategies, and reconfigurable topologies to enable adaptive performance across multi-band and wideband scenarios.

In addition to conventional microwave bands, I am expanding my research horizon towards the millimetre-wave (mm Wave) and terahertz (THz) spectrum, which are central to the realization of next-generation 6G communication systems. Here, the focus shifts to ultra-compact, high-gain, and frequency-agile filtenna architectures that can address the challenges of high path loss and tight spectral allocation. I aim to explore innovative fabrication methods, including advanced PCB processes and additive manufacturing, to achieve precise geometries and robust performance at these extremely high frequencies.

My research philosophy is driven by the vision of bridging fundamental electromagnetic design principles with practical system-level needs. Whether it is improving the bandwidth of a microstrip array for satellite uplinks, minimizing interference in radar front ends through integrated filtering, or pioneering THz filtenna concepts for ultra-high-speed wireless links, I seek solutions that offer both theoretical novelty and application readiness. By combining rigorous simulation, prototyping, and measurement, I ensure that each design not only meets performance benchmarks but also addresses manufacturability and integration considerations.

Ultimately, my quest is to contribute to the evolution of RF and microwave front-end technologies, enabling communication systems that are faster, smarter, and more efficient laying the groundwork for advanced satellite networks, resilient radar systems, and the transformative possibilities of the 6G era.

Abhishek Patel has taught at the University’s School of Engineering since May 2025.
