What you’ll do
Engage with music and the performing arts as a way to develop your creative, communicative, and collaborative abilities. The course is a series of activities designed to encourage you to think and feel like artists do — where creativity is treated as a muscle developed through regular practice. You’ll also have space for reflection through writing, listening, and mindfulness, with the aim of bringing more clarity to your academic and life journey.
What you’ll make
A portfolio comprising:
- A piece of writing (e.g. a story or poem inspired by a piece of music)
- A piece of music created from sound samples using free software
- A simple musical instrument model made from found objects and materials
- A group performance
Your six days
| Mon | Introductions, ice-breakers, active listening and writing. Understanding your creative strengths; sharing talent. |
| Tue | Knowledge deep-dive — genres, musical elements, history. Elements of a performance; ideating on the final presentation. (Ideally this session at the IME museum.) |
| Wed | Rasa — theory, evolution, expression in music. Interpreting a traditional story using music, movement, and theatre. Scripting and dividing work for the final performance. |
| Thu | Music software — basics of DAWs, using sound samples and a free online tool to create a piece of music. Starting rehearsals for final performance. |
| Fri | Musical instruments — principles, classification, listening. Creating an instrument model from found objects. Performance rehearsals. |
| Sat | Final presentation. |
Mornings and afternoons are differently themed each day. Sessions run full-day (approx. 10am–5pm).
How you’ll be assessed
On in-class participation, the process of developing your portfolio, and the final portfolio itself.
