Dr. Archana Purushotham is a board-certified Vascular and Headache Neurologist and Neuroscientist with an interdisciplinary background spanning medicine, biomedical engineering, neuroscience, neuroimaging, stroke, and integrative medicine. She is clinically affiliated with the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center (MEDVAMC), Houston, where she directs the Headache Center of Excellence for veterans and contributes to specialized neurological care.
Her research interests have included neuroimaging, functional MRI (fMRI), acute stroke imaging, and the neural basis of cognitive function. Her ongoing research explores the neural correlates of cognitive ability using MRI-based approaches.
In recent years, Dr. Purushotham has developed a strong interest in integrative medicine, particularly Ayurveda, yoga, meditation, and their potential integration with evidence-based modern medical practice. Her work in this area includes research on complementary approaches to neurological disorders, and she has published research on stand-alone Ayurvedic treatment in acute stroke.
As Chief Medical Director of Svatantra Integrative Neurorehab, she is involved in advancing integrative approaches to neurological rehabilitation and patient care. Her clinical interests also include battlefield acupuncture and Ayurvedic diet and lifestyle counselling. As a Whole Health Champion at MEDVAMC, she has contributed to the transformation of conventional healthcare toward a more comprehensive, patient-centred and integrative model.
