Prof. Oliver Gunther

Professor Oliver Günther, Ph.D. is a distinguished computer scientist and academic leader and currently serves as President of the University of Potsdam, a position he has held since 2012, with his current term extending through 2029. He is also associated with the Research Institute for Sustainability (RIFS), Potsdam, contributing to interdisciplinary research at the intersection of digital transformation, governance, and sustainability.

Professor Günther holds a Diploma in Industrial Engineering from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Computer Science from the University of California, Berkeley. His research spans enterprise information systems, IT strategy, security and privacy, digital asset management, and geographic information systems, with extensive publications in leading academic journals.

He previously served as President of the German Informatics Society, Dean at Humboldt University of Berlin, and has led numerous nationally funded research initiatives. As a leader in higher education and digital innovation, he brings deep expertise in technology‑driven institutional transformation and sustainability‑oriented policy development.
