Chanakya University hosted a talk on “Sustainability in Environment” on 10 September 2025 by Dr. Pravin Jagdale, Carbon Scientist, Founder of BHUMI Pvt. Ltd. (Bharat–Germany), and Chief Scientific Officer, Fashion for Biodiversity (Italy–Germany). The session was held at Room 301 from 11:50 a.m. to 12:50 p.m.
Dr. Jagdale addressed the pressing challenge of plastic pollution, noting its scale, persistence, and impact on biodiversity and ecosystems. He explained the concept of Plastic Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), which evaluates plastics’ environmental footprint from raw material extraction to disposal. By revealing hidden costs such as carbon emissions and water use, LCA helps policymakers and industries identify critical intervention points to reduce ecological damage.
The talk emphasized actionable solutions through plastic reduction and reuse. Strategies included minimizing single-use plastics, promoting biodegradable alternatives, and extending the life of plastic products through repair and repurposing, aligning with principles of the circular economy.
From a material science perspective, Dr. Jagdale explored polymers, highlighting their durability and versatility as well as the disposal challenges they create. He pointed to innovations in carbon nanotubes and carbon polymers as future alternatives, with applications in electronics, renewable energy, healthcare, and aerospace. These materials promise performance benefits while reducing environmental harm.
The session closed with a call to action, underscoring that sustainable solutions require collaboration among science, policy, industry, and individuals. Participants were urged to adopt responsible practices and advocate for systemic change to address plastic pollution.
