Dr. Deepak Paramashivan (IIT Madras), renowned Sarangi player, composer, and scholar with doctorates in Energy and Climate Engineering (IISc) and Music (University of Alberta), delivered a session titled “The Mathematical Foundations of Music: A Cross-Cultural Exploration.” He explained how Indian classical concepts such as ragas, taala cycles, and note relationships align with mathematical ideas of ratios, patterns, and symmetry. Drawing parallels with Western harmony and other global traditions, he highlighted the universal link between mathematics and music. Enriched with live Sarangi demonstrations, the lecture offered participants a rare experience of seeing rigorous scholarship and artistic expression come together.
