Chanakya University School of Biosciences

Junior Research Fellow (JRF) / PhD Position – Plant Science & Molecular Biology

Applications are invited for the position of a Junior Research Fellow (JRF) under the ANRF–ECRG funded project titled “Understanding Night-Time Nitrogen Flux Through Integrated Physiological and Molecular Approaches for High-Protein Rice”, at School of Biosciences, Chanakya University, Bangalore.

This position offers an excellent opportunity to work in an interdisciplinary research environment integrating plant physiology, molecular biology, and phenomics to address key challenges in crop productivity and nutritional security. The position is initially for one year and may be extended based on performance. High-performing candidates will be encouraged to register for a PhD program at School of Biosciences, Chanakya University, subject to university regulations.

Project description

The project aims to dissect the physiological and molecular mechanisms underlying night-time nitrogen flux in rice, with the goal of enhancing grain protein content while maintaining yield. The selected candidate will:

Quantify nocturnal nitrogen dynamics using physiological and isotopic approaches

  • Study gene expression and regulatory pathways involved in nitrogen transport and assimilation
  • Integrate physiological, molecular, and phenomics datasets
  • Evaluate genotypic variation in nitrogen-use efficiency and protein accumulation
  • Contribute to developing strategies for high-protein and climate-resilient rice varieties

Essential Qualifications and criteria

  • Master’s degree (M.Sc./M.Tech) in Plant Sciences / Biotechnology / Biochemistry / Life Sciences or related disciplines
  • Strong foundation in Plant Physiology, Molecular Biology, and Biochemistry
  • Upper age limit as per ANRF norms

Desirable qualifications

  • Experience in plant phenotyping, gas exchange, isotope techniques, or physiological assays
  • Hands-on experience in molecular biology (RNA work, qRT-PCR, etc.)
  • Familiarity with data analysis
  • Strong interest in nitrogen metabolism, crop improvement, and climate resilience
  • Motivation for long-term research (PhD-oriented candidates preferred))

Fellowship / Stipend

  • ₹37,000 per month + HRA for the first two years (as Junior Research Fellow)
  • ₹42,000 per month + HRA in the third year (upon upgradation to Senior Research Fellow, based on performance and as per ANRF norms)

Interested candidates are requested to send their CV to preethi.v@chanakyauniversity.edu.in on or before 15th May 2026.
