CBT-REBT Workshop
The School of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, Chanakya University, successfully organized a four-day Skills Training Workshop on Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) and Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy (REBT) from 6–9 May 2026. The workshop was conducted by Prof. Kadhiravan Subramanian, Senior Professor and Dean of Social Sciences at Periyar University, Salem, an expert in the field of clinical psychology and psychotherapy.
The training offered participants a comprehensive introduction to CBT as a structured, goal-oriented, and present-focused therapeutic approach aimed at identifying and modifying dysfunctional thinking and behaviour. Prof. Kadhiravan emphasized Aaron Beck’s cognitive model, explaining how core beliefs, dysfunctional assumptions, and automatic negative thoughts shape emotional and behavioural responses. Through engaging sessions, students gained insights into how maladaptive thought patterns contribute to conditions such as anxiety, depression, and stress, and how these can be effectively addressed through cognitive restructuring and behavioural strategies.
The workshop combined conceptual understanding with practical techniques, including identifying cognitive distortions, reframing negative thoughts, journaling, relaxation methods, and behavioural experiments. Interactive discussions, case-based illustrations, and skill-building exercises enabled participants to internalize therapeutic processes and apply them in real-world contexts.
Approximately 20 postgraduate and final-year undergraduate students of Psychology from the School of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences attended the workshop. Their active participation and engagement enriched the learning environment and fostered meaningful academic exchange.
Overall, the workshop provided valuable exposure to evidence-based psychological interventions, equipping students with foundational counselling skills and reinforcing Chanakya University’s commitment to experiential learning and professional development in the social sciences.
